Habits: Mental Models

Mental Models- (source: wikipedia)

mental model is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something works in the real world. It is a representation of the surrounding world, the relationships between its various parts and a person's intuitive perception about his or her own acts and their consequences.

Mental models gives us the framework through which we can make sense of the world around us. There are many mental models defined already and discussed at length such as -

  1. First Principles

  2. Second Order Thinking

  3. Probabilistic Thinking

  4. Inversion

  5. Compounding

…and many more that are documented here in the Farnam Street Blog. Like he says -

A mental model is simply a representation of how something works. We cannot keep all of the details of the world in our brains, so we use models to simplify the complex into understandable and organizable chunks.

Consciously or unconsciously we all follow one or the other mental models. Have you thought about

  1. What kind of Habit models we follow or can follow?

  2. How can we make our daily habits useful to us?

  3. How to make that delta change in our habits that will have a compounding effect?

Introducing the Habit Models of thinking that will aide you in making conscious decisions and make that delta change in your life.

Habits Model- I

Good habits are made from repetition. The more you do it, the more you will do it. So, get started. NOW.

Most of the time, you tent to start things and then after few days or months you stop. e.g. New Year Resolutions, gym time, healthy eating, learning new skill, your online class etc. It is incredibly difficult to sustain the habit, if you are not passionate about it. Most thing we do, we don’t like them. It is good for us but if given a change to not do it, we won’t do it.

If I told you you can reduce your weight by not going to gym and taking some health supplements - you will take it. And then suffer from side effects lifelong.

Most good things in life don’t come easily to us. If they come easily, mostly they are not good.

All great things require effort and persistence. Perseverance beats talent. Any day.

If you want to learn new skill, practice it everyday.

If you want to reduce weight, eat healthy.

If you want to feel better, exercise.

If you want to become a good writer, write everyday.

If you want to think better, read everyday.

Doing things over and over again will make you master it. Then you can do whatever you want. That delta change will give you compounding returns.

Habits Model - II

If you can imagine you can do it, you can do it.

Most of the time, we are too lazy to do new things. We are comfortable in our own setting and become complacent over time. We don’t do new things or start new projects.

The key to starting a new thing, is to imagine over and over again that you are already doing it. When you tell your mind that you are doing it, even virtually, then you are preparing it to expect the unexpected.

Imagination is the fuel of building new habits-

Try imagining running a marathon -day by day improving on the distance.

Try imagining writing a book - one page at a time.

Try imagining going to a new country - one city at a time.

Try imagining running your own business - one milestone at a time.

It’s all in the head. Imagine. Execute.

Make that delta change and follow the Habit Models.
